World Breastfeeding Week is an annual celebration which is observed from 1st August to 7th August every year. This week was first celebrated by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action(WABA) in the year 1992. It is observed in 120 countries all over the world by UNICEF, WHO and their partners including individuals, organizations, and governments.
The theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2020 is “Support breastfeeding for a healthier planet”.WHO and UNICEF appealed Government to protect and foster women’s access to skilled breastfeeding counseling.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) accented the value of breastfeeding for both mothers and children. Both the organizations proposed breastfeeding for the first 6 months baby and then supplemented breastfeeding for atleast 1 year upto 2 years or more. World Breastfeeding Week was first inaugurated to protect and support ‘breastfeeding’.
Breastfeeding is important as well as essential for babies. Breastmilk is the best nutrition a mother can offer to a newborn baby. It supplies all the necessary nutrients in the proper proportions and keeps the baby healthy. The milk is easily digested and thus the baby doesn’t suffer from diseases like constipation, diarrhea or upset stomach. Not only this, but it also insulates against allergies, obesity, diabetes, ear infections and even cancer.
